The number of fat cells increases until the age of 4 in the human body and do not increase in number in the following period. Therefore, weight gain in an adult depends on the increase in the volume of fat cells. In other words, the fat cells do not increase in number but their volume increases.
The first way to get rid of such weight in overweight patients is diet and exercise. Even after the ideal weight has been achieved after these are done, there may be persistent fattening in some parts of the body. The hip region, waist region, abdomen, inner parts of the thigh and knees are the areas that do not respond to diet. Liposuction is the ideal treatment method for these areas.
Liposuction is the removal of fats by a system connected to vacuum, breaking down them with cannulae advanced through the incisions of about 0.5 cm made on the body. By this means, it is a method that permanently reduces the number of fat cells.
The cannulae used may be of different diameters depending on the different parts of the body. Thus, the fat cells can be effectively reached in all areas of the body. By means of these surgeries, the contour of the body is corrected, it is not a weight-loss method, it can only be used to correct the body contours.
After the liposuction, postoperative massage therapy is generally recommended in order to make the remaining fat tissue look regularly under the skin and not to cause indentations and bulges. Also patient is recommended to wear a liposuction corset for up to 6 weeks.
If there is no wound healing problem in the patient, scars formed due to the entrance hole of cannulae heal in the future in such a way that no one can notice them.
The effect of liposuction is permanent since it permanently decreases the number of fat cells, however fattening may again occur in those areas due to an increase in the volume of the remaining fat cells, therefore it is necessary to always pay attention to lifestyle, not to give up regular diet and exercise in order to maintain this effect.
Technological advances have made significant contributions to facilitate the removal of fat. These are;
1. Infiltration pumps: They are liquid pumps used to administer the liquid into the fat removal (liposuction) area more regularly and rapidly to facilitate the procedure, to be able to operate without blood and pain, and to help the breakdown of fat.
2. VASER: It is a device giving ultrasonic energy to the application area following the administration of liquid which allows the fat to be removed more intensely and the skin to be tightened more easily.
3. LASER (SMARTLIPO - SLIMLIPO): It is the application of laser energy to the liquid-administered area to help the fat to be dissolved.
4. VIBROLIPO: It is the use of vibrating cannulae during the liposuction procedure.
