COSMETIC EYELID SURGERIES
The eyelids with the thinnest skin of the body are the areas where the signs of aging show up first. With the effect of gravity, excess skin and sags on the upper eyelid, wrinkles and eye bags on the lower eyelid attract attention and give a tired, sad and old expression to individual. Besides that, they may also cause visual field restriction which is a functional problem.
Individuals over 40 years of age with sagged upper and lower eyelids or eye bags are suitable patients for the surgical correction. This surgery, called blepharoplasty, is a method targeting to remove the excess skin and fat tissue on the eyelid.
In the surgical procedure, the incision is planned so as to be hidden in the natural fold of the upper eyelid. By removing the excess skin and fat tissue, the existing membrane in front of the fat tissue that causes herniation is strengthened. Moreover, the incisions on the lower eyelid can be made just below the eyelashes and in the younger patients who only have bags under eyes, this incision can be made inside the eyelid.
The operation can be performed under local anaesthesia or sedation. Patients can be discharged within the same day. 5 days later, sutures are removed. Patients may return to work 3 days later. They can wear their contact lenses 2 weeks later. The eyelids are the least scar-forming area of the body and the scars become hardly visible in about 6 months.
If the skin is removed more than necessary, closure difficulties arise. Excessive removal of the fat tissue may lead to pitting in the eyes in the forthcoming years. Inadequate reconstruction of the fat tissue may lead to recurrence of the bags under eyes. Failure to provide the support for the lower eyelid may result in rounding of the eye corners or excessive appearance of the white of the eye (the sclera). Noticeable scars may occur.
